Governance and the Not for Profit Organisation
Not for profit organizations have particular and peculiar needs in governance. Not for profit organizations differ from commercial enterprises and their governance needs differ as well.
Commercial enterprises are profit driven, the not for profit sector is mission/vision driven. Whilst financial integrity and proper controls are important in all organizations, in the not for profit sector governance has as much to do with the proper pursuit of the organization’s vision as it has to ensuring financial controls. Therefore, governance principles, whilst still relevant, must be tailored to the particular needs of the not for profit organisation.
The Australian not for profit regulator, Australian Charities and Not for profits Commission (ACNC), emphasises that good governance is essential for all charities.
